"The Pom"

When Rick and Lyn Hardy were in Perth as a part of their caravan tour of Oz,
we were able to catch up on several occasions.   The golf game was played on
the 6Oct07 and the cart was for Rick, suffice to say, very enjoyable day.
In addition, the restaurant photo of Rick, Lyn, Deb and I were taken on
their last night in Perth before departing to continue their odyssey on 10
Feb this year.

Hello Pom, I may be able to shed some light on the article last month about the Air Medal presentations. I spoke to Group Captain Mac Cottrell DFC  "Mac the Fac" at the official opening of the Post 45 Gallery in the War memorial recently. He told me that the FAC Pilots from Vietnam are having a reunion and that of the original lot there were only a few left. They flew under the control of the USAF.  The awards are probably for them and if so are very deserving and about time.

Gerry Mapstone

Kath and Kel
Hi Bob,

I'm Pete Wattie's brother-in-law; Deb and Pete are in Adelaide for
Deb's Sister Karen's 50th birthday.

To celebrate we had a party where everyone came as someone (or thing)
starting with the letter 'K'.
I thought the guys would get a kick out of seeing Pete letting his hair
down, or in this case putting it up.
The attached photos are of the guest of honour (Karen), Deb and Pete who
came as Kath & Kim and Kel from the TV series Kath & Kim.

If these pics are too small I can forward the lager formats (1.2mb each).

Hope this gets a laugh or two.

Pom,

This was posted on the EBB.

Hi,

My name is Stan Nowakowski, and I’m trying to track down a fellow graduate of the June 1978 class of the Officer Cadet School, Portsea.  He was an Airfield Defence Guard by the name of Robert James NORMAN (service number A124047, DOB 22nd December 1954).

Our class is having its 30th anniversary this year on the weekend after the Queen’s Birthday long weekend, at the cadets’ mess at Portsea.  We’ve not been able to locate Bob, so I’d appreciate any assistance that you might be able to offer.  I can be contacted on the numbers shown below for any further details.

Cheers,

Stan

Mate,

Bob Norman was not an ADG he was a GRDEFO . I last saw he when he was posted to Wagga in 1984.

Soon after, he was spending a fair bit of time in Canberra, and soon faded from sight.

Good Morning,
My name is CPL Brendon Fredericks and I am currently a PAF ADG with 1AFDS Detachment Melbourne. We are a reservist detachment and currently have a Reserve Rifle Flight in location and 3 PAF ADGs to assist with training and day to day business for the Reservists.  I have spent my whole career in Brisbane and was posted to Melbourne start of 2008.  Over the years I have attended numerous Anzac Day Parades in Brisbane followed by attending the Blue Beret Association function.  These functions are were always fantastic and thoroughly enjoyed by all.  Now that I am posted to Melbourne I was wanting to know if there is any equivalent function or a pub where all the ADG Veterans meet in Melbourne?  1AFDS Melbourne would have approx 10-15 ADGs extremely keen to meet with ADG Veterans at a Melbourne pub for some drinks after our March through the City.  Any info you could provide would be greatly appreciated.  The Association site also looks great.

Cheers

CARRIAGE OF MEDALS ON AIRCRAFT
For information of Association members, those of us who plan to travel while in possession of military medals, especially around ANZAC DAY & the 60th Anniversary activities in November, should be aware that they will need to have their court mounted medals (only the type with the large pin closure device) in their checked baggage. This means that medals must be carried as luggage, not placed in carry-on baggage or on your person.
The current situation is the brooch pin on the rear of medal racks is now considered a weapon in accordance with Air Safety Regulations. Our recommendation is to comply with these restrictions. If you need
clarification contact your airline.
G’day Pom

Pom,
I got your email address from the ADGie net website. I'm nearly finished a book on the history of Air Force combat support (from AFC days and 1920s to present day with most focus on the last decade of CSG). I'm looking for photos to include, in particular of the Vietnam era and after in the 1970-80s (on exercise preferred).
I need serious photos with any combat support theme - ADGs or any other on the base in a support role (comms, loggies, base equipment, defences, etc but not techos).
Would you mind asking your crew for me. The easiest way to get them to me is by email, with a caption at least identifying place and date.
I can only include a couple, but at the moment I don't have any of Vietnam or in the 70s.
I will acknowledge the owner of the photo in the text under any photo I use but I can't pay for use of the photos.
I am getting close to finish, so if anyone can help I'd appreciate hearing from them soon.

Great website. I recognise quite a few names.
Regards,
Graham O'Brien

Dear all,
FYI - there is going to be a documentary shown on channel 2 Anzac day
at 2300hrs called 'Casualties of War".  It was made by a local East
Timor veteran and discusses PTSD and issues about his and two other
soldiers return from active duty.  It is a very good piece and
articulates very well their experiences.  It is certainly worth a look
if you can stay up that late.  It may be worth advertising to the ex
servicemen community.
Attached is the proposal concerning the use of GP practice nurses for home visits that we spoke to Minister Griffin about during our March meeting. Aged care is a big issue in the veteran community but unfortunately, in my view, there is not enough focus on it amongst veterans not in that category. We need to be aware of our responsibility to be across all issues effecting our membership regardless of age. This proposal is an important initiative please pass it on to your members and others and consider including it in your newsletters etc.

Cheer and thanks

Blue Ryan

The Hon Alan Griffin
Minister for Veterans' Affairs
Parliament House
Canberra ACT 2600

Dear Minister,

The following is a proposal from the TPI Federation for your consideration concerning the use of GP Practice Nurses for home visits.

Background

The complexities of treating aged veterans are well known as they tend to have a range of chronic conditions including post-traumatic stress disorder. Many veterans, and war widows, are reluctant to travel and we have a situation in Australia where 80% of female and 70% of male GPs, who for various reasons, choose not to do home visits. This has seen a drop in home visits by GPs to veterans of 30% in the last 6 years.

Key issues

Government policies encourage veterans and others to remain in the family home rather than move into an aged care facility and as they get older some veterans are less able and less likely to travel to their GP unless it is an emergency. The ability for the health care system to deliver preventative health services in the home is vital in assisting to keep older people in their home; veterans particularly are more likely to have a number of chronic conditions requiring close monitoring.

Currently GPs are struggling with their patient workload which is the main reason why they are unable to undertake patient home visits and this workload is likely to increase. The use of practice nurses to conduct home visits for less urgent care and the very important routine monitoring of patients will reduce GP workload and ensure a better quality of care for aged veterans.

Some of the tasks that could be undertaken by practice nurses include medication reviews, routine monitoring, wound dressing, blood pressure checks, flu vaccinations, blood glucose monitoring, home safety assessments and dementia assessments. Unlike some other health services provided in the home the GP practice nurse reports back to the veterans treating physician ensuring a better treatment management outcome. The Australian Medical Association supports the use of GP practice nurses.

This initiative is said to be revenue neutral for veterans with savings on a booked car with driver for appointments, a lesser chance of hospitalization and remaining in the family home for longer before admittance into an aged care facility. In the longer term the use of practice nurses should provide better clinical outcomes as well as being a money saver.

Proposal

The TPI Federation recommends that the government creates a new general practice item number within the Local Medical Officer scheme to fund home visits by GP practice nurses to assist in the management of veteran patients who are suffering from complex and/or chronic conditions.

Over the next 20 days we will be changing over to iinet broadband Naked ADSL2 and will have a few interruptions with our email & home phone services in between times.

In a day or two we will be cut off broadband so please send only small emails (such as letter emails) , no pictures, videos etc as we will be on dial up service for a while.

Our home phone will be cut off near the end of the 20 days change over period.

You can call us on our mobiles.      When the change is completed you will still be able ring us on our normal phone number

"We want Sluggo"

The first words from Anzac Day

Hi Bob, i have sent you a photo of us ADG in Sydney's anzac march. The weather was good to us this year and it was good to catch up with the regular group. Brods sends his love and the girls were shouting we want Sluggo.

Take care John [ JR] Ronan...... Photo to come.

G'Day Pom

Did ANZAC Day at my local RSL ,Doylson/Wyee on the Central Coast NSW.
I have to say this sub branch really looks after its members, not
many do these days.

They throw in Breakfast, Lunch and free drinks all day. It was good
service, even if it was rained inside, but local schools
sports groups etc involved made you feel good that young kids are so involved.

There is also the Hunter/Central Coast Vietnam Veterans  Association
based there and they meet every 2 months.

Anyone in the Hunter or Central Coast would not be doing there selves
a disservice to check this club out.

Oh and a bloke called "Feathers" Peacock said to say hello.

Tiny

BTW I'm going on the cruise, anyone else going. ??

Glad you had a great day like the rest of us Greta was a washout so the service was small and indoors

The Pom.
