POSITIVE IDENTIFICATION OF AUSSIE DIGGER IN VIETNAM

Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Alan Griffin, today announced that an Australian Government team working in Vietnam has positively identified remains recovered in the Minh Dam Mountains (formerly Long Hai Hills) Vung Tau Province as those of Lance Corporal John Francis Gillespie.

This brave soldier was killed on the 17 April 1971 when the helicopter in which he was travelling was shot down by enemy fire. Lance Corporal Gillespie, who was pinned beneath the helicopter by his lower limbs, was unable to be rescued from the ensuing intense fire despite the efforts of other crew members.  Heavy enemy activity in the area prevented recovery of LCPL Gillespie’s remains before the Australian forces’ withdrawal from Vietnam.

The Australian Government team, including two members of Operation Aussies Home, located the remains during a complete and thorough archaeological excavation of the site, which had been located by Mr Peter Aylett, of Operation Aussies Home, in February 2004.

The family of Lance Corporal Gillespie have been advised of the latest developments and the Australian Government is committed to respecting their wishes in regards to repatriation to Australia and appropriate funeral arrangements. This process will hopefully be concluded before Christmas.

The family of Lance Corporal Gillespie has asked that the media respect their privacy at this difficult time.

"Lance Corporal Gillespie lost his life while serving our country and I am pleased that these collaborative efforts can bring closure to his family after so many years," Mr Griffin said.

“Australia is grateful to the Vietnamese authorities who have greatly assisted the Australian Government Team efforts in Vietnam. Their continued assistance in honouring these Australian soldiers is greatly appreciated.

“I am also grateful to Operation Aussies Home, led by Mr Jim Bourke, who have worked tirelessly for many years to locate these remains as well as the remains of Lance Corporal Parker and Private Gillson who were repatriated to Australia in June this year,” Mr Griffin said.

“Finally, LCPL Gillespie was a brave digger who gave his life for our country.  We honour him and will commemorate his return to Australia with dignity and according to his family’s wishes.”

I am not sure whether people are aware, but WGCDR John (Shaky) Littlewood (Retd) passed away on 29 November 2007 in Nanoose Bay BC Canada after a brief illness. His funeral was held in Canada on 7 December 2007. Shakey served as a Ground Defence Officer from the mid 70's until his retirement from the RAAF in 2000. John moved to Canada shortly thereafter with his wife.  RIP
