"The Pom"
Pom,

Just going through the old Vietnam Members etc. Acouple of annomilies you may wish to amend;
Peter Sheriff = 1OSU 4.6.70 - 31.8.70 then to 9SQN 1.10.70 - 8.01.70 (there is a one month not accounted for in that period)

Greg Harrop = 1OSU 4.6.70 - 3.6.71 (according to official records there is no mention of him serving in 9SQN as a door gunner, could we get some one to verify this and get the official records changed)

Glen Tillack = 1OSU 4.6.70 - 1.12.70 then to 9SQN 01.12.70 - 31.5.71 then to 1OSU 31.5.71 - 03.6.71

Mate, hope that helps.

Regards

Tex and Geoff Phillips.

Just a footnote, Geoff Phillips is the last remaining ADG who was posted to Vung Tau on the 04. 06. 1970.

Members posted with him were; Glen Tillack, Peter Sheriff and Greg Harrop.

Hello Bob,

Would you mind removing the order form on your web site for the
Bushranger Story CD please and replacing it with the attached?

Currently the printed version is not available and unless
we can get it printed at a much lower price it is going to be 'over
the top' price wise.
I have attached the new order form but it is in WORD.

Thanks for your help,

Diane

Hi Pom, to verify Tex and Geoff’s e mail.  Greg Harrop served as a door gunner around the same period as myself.  Exact dates I do not have.

Kind regards

Bob,

Sorted through some slides a while ago.  This one taken sometime between April and October '71.

Hello Bob,

Brian is writing to you regarding Tillack, Harrop and Sheriff.  I can
assure you that all 3 did serve with 9SQN in Vietnam but as they were
probably only attached and not actually posted into the squadron DVA
don't consider that as a posting hence the non-appearance on the DVA
nominal roll.  Brian is looking up the actual dates that they were
with 9SQN and will eventually get back to you.

cheers,

Diane
Hi Bob,

Apologies for the delay. I can confirm from the unit Nominal Roll that Greg Harrop was attached into 9SQN from 1OSU with effect 04Jun70 but I cannot provide you with an end date for his service with 9. Presumably this would have been 03Jun71 as indicated in DVA records although no guarantee. He is mentioned as having served with both 1OSU and 9SQN in 'Vietnam Remembered' but ADGs were just attached into 9 from their parent outfits so might appear as having served with 2 units in various references.

Depending upon date of arrival at unit, a member might not be included on a Nominal Roll until the following month but his date of arrival was recorded so his start date of tour can be established. This situation might explain some gaps of 1 month in dates recorded by DVA. Unfortunately, end dates of tours were not recorded on Nominal Rolls but usually mentioned in monthly Commanding Officer reports; however, the CO's report for June 1971 is not included in the records I hold from the Office of Air Force History.

Hope this info assists.

Cheers Mate and stay well,

BRIAN DIROU

Greg Harrop - Service With 9 SQN

Hi Pom

I have been into the National Archives of Australia site and have found some info on Greg’s time with 9SQN.

I found a 9SQN nominal roll which showed that he was attached to 9SQN wef 30 Jul 70.  Also found details of
operations which showed he has his first sortie on 01 Aug 70.

I have attached a copy of the pages from the nominal roll on operations sheet.  Although the ops sheet is marked secret, it is available for all the research.

Unfortunately the only 9 SQN records that have been digitized are for the period Jun 69 to Dec 70.

Below is the link to the Archives site for all who are interested.

Hope this helps.

Hi Bob how's things.

As i was recently invited to attend the annual general meeting of the Australian Peacekeepers and Peacemakers Veterans's Association at RAAF Richmond, i thought i would give an update on the base as i have previously done on RAAF Fairbairn.

Firstly to get onto the base you have to report to a new guard room outside the base where you are issued with a photo ID that must be displayed.      After leaving you proceed to the main gate which is exactly as it was 35 years ago. The only difference being is that it is now manned by civilians.
Proceed down the main drive past the service station which is now closed past the cinema which is still operating to the sargents mess.

After the meeting which was held on saturday 2 nd feb, i walked outside and noticed the ADG training buildings had both been demolished. The one closest to the sargents mess has been replaced by an ablution block. As i wes given a fair amount of freedom to roam the base i went to the ASCO canteen ,only to find it was closed at 1400 and was only half it's previous size. Around the corner was our boozer, wait for this it was closed and opened from 1700 to 2000.
[ Shorty would not of been happy )..

After this i proceeded to the ADG barracks. The first room which i believe was the hut orderly is now a kitchen sink, fridge, microwave ext. The rooms that housed 4 of us now house 1 airman. Get this bit either male or female.
From the looks of the room i was shown they no longer have room inspections as this young bloke had everything in his room except his gear box. Times have certanly changed.

Hope to se you on Anzac day ,take care John [JR] Ronan

Ps did i mention they also have BBQ entertainment areas along side the huts.

G'day Bob,
I received a copy of the Bushranger disc and can vouch that it is well worth getting a copy for those who are thinking about it.

Regards Vic
P.S. Thanks to Bob Golley and others who provided various bits of info in the February issue.

FYI, As I write this I am sitting in the Sergeants Mess at Darwin after a C-17 support task which started and ended on Tuesday and took my team and I to Pearce, Dili and Darwin.  We head back to Brisbane per civvy means today (Thursday).

Vic

G'Day Guys,

Just an update on my continuing travels with work, Having a break from Iraq for a bit, Just landed in Qatar will be working here for the next month or so.

I must add to the site, that I have had alot of inquiries from guy's and from companies in Iraq for work and checking on CV's that are floating around, I will not name anyone in particular, but stating that you are Australian Special Forces - SASR equivalent does not win many friends or get you a job in Iraq as a PSD operator.

Anyway Stay Safe.

Hello Pom
Just a quick note to let you know my new address
                 Its dco25571@bigpond.net.au
I thought I had already changed it,maybe too much medication
                                  thanks

Hi Guys
.
I hope you don't mind me writing to several of you in the same E-mail. I hope all is well, with all of you, and I apologise for not being in touch with you , but I have truly been flat out (and yes, I am sure you have been too, we all have our responsibilities!)
I came back from "retreat" at Fingal Bay early as Jim was still unwell, the upshot of that is that he has been in Warner's Bay Hospital since last Monday, and they haven't yet come to many conclusions finding out what has been wrong for so long, but he has to have physio, and tests and he has to use a stick to walk, as well as having medication to alleviate a  depression he found himself in ---and he was in a lot of pain, however we have not long been home from seeing him today and he seems a bit better, and will probably be home on Friday.
The girls  (Abby and Louise) are well and have been helpful when they can.But they are pretty busy with school, sports, dancing and of course their friends, as teenagers do.

Credit where it is due, Laurelle (once the rebel d'ter) also has been very helpful, she has spent 2 days working really hard in the jungle of a garden we had and (Jim's Sister) Maureen and I have digging and weeding ,using mattocks and shovels! I sure could use a massage! We wanted to have the garden nice for when Jim gets home, because it is basically beyond him just yet. But our ages sure let us know to "give it a rest" for a few days now.old Arthur-Itis has been a'visitin', as well as the muscle gremlins, wreaking havoc with ou muscles..

I have heard that Col Davies is unwell, and we wish him a speedy recovery, and I hope that any of you and families who are not traveling too well are hanging in there and taking care.

We would love to hear from you and how you are all getting on, Once more I apologize for the "generic" E-mail, but it makes it easier for me and my hands

Tom and George, I hope you don't mind getting the same e-mail as Jim's mates, as he considers you both his mates, and it saves me typing it all out again,

Hope all is well with all of you and and all of yours.

Lotsa Love,Stella Conway xxxxxxxx
G’Day Mate,

I’m an ex-USAF Caribou hand from Vungers, circa 1969-71 with plenty pax hours logged on Wallaby Air, 35 Sq. I’ve been thinking of a holiday to the old haunts and recently ran across a web posting from ’01 that mentions your convivial venture there – Ettamogah Pub. It sounded like the perfect place for a veteran of Bar Street and the Back Beach to check in.  I’m wondering: Are you still at it? If not, are you able to recommend a worthy successor? A number of years ago I corresponded briefly with an Ozzer named Tony Nash who seemed a prominent presence in town. I believe he was tied up with a fellow named “KJ” in an ex-pat enterprise known as 626 Cafι. Do you know if he’s still about?

Warm Regards & Aloha,

Doug Lamerson
