November 2006 |

Well fellas crank up the volume the music is back on. This month I dream of Jennie The Pom. |

The annual Back to the Bush Vietnam Veterans Reunion. was on again over the past
week at Bruce Rock. This small town 260 k's West of Perth in the WA wheat Belt ( population of approximately 700) put on the usual free BBq, free booze and entertainment on Saturday night and a free Breakfast on Sunday Morning. This annual event just keeps growing in size ( it has tripled over the past few years to many thousands) Vets turn up to enjoy the towns hospitality along with catching up with mates making new friends, telling a few warries etc.. The oval and sporting complex, becomes one massive camp ground and entertainment venue for the week. ADG's have more or less taken over the Caravan Park and have a permanent booking to hold certain van and cabin sites. Most vets arrive late in the week for the Saturday Afternoon Parade through Bruce Rock and BBQ. Others make a week of it and the town has got it all organized with different activities going every day of the week Golf, shooting, Bingo, concerts, Bands, horse riding etc etc. On the Friday night most ADG's and partners had a Dinner together at the Ardath Hotel, http://www.brucerock.wa.gov.au/tourism_and_events/ardath_hotel.htm l which is about 21 k south from Bruce Rock before heading back in a Convoy to the caravan park for coffee and a yarn. This year Alan Giltrap organized a fly past to start the Parade. I was told the pilot who flew the mission was one of the last pilots in the RAAF who flew in Vietnam. We were surprised to see the fly past as a big hit of lighting happened just before we started to form up. The wind and rain blew up as we marched down the main street but, it didn't worry the locals and families of the Veterans they were out in force clapping and cheering us on. ADG's seen at Bruce Rock this year were Peter Wattie, Alan Lamb, Barry Wanstall, Stan Hull, Father Thomas, Alan Giltrap and Blue Hayes. Kerry Smithers also Joined us. Have attached a few pics of the Parade and Oval Camp site. The Town of Bruce Rock also gives away free land check out their web site if your interested www.brucerock.wa.gov.au/ Regards Mick Bergin |
Back to the Bush " Bruce Rock " Reunion 2006 |
Didn't say any thing in the article, but Father Thomas was very sick and was put
in hospital ( Saturday Morning) at Bruce Rock. he had radiation treatment
in Perth before his arrival in Bruce Rock. I spoke to him on the Friday night
, He has cancer around the throat area and. from what I understand he is looking
at a op to remove the cancer. He told me he has a one in four chance that it
will work. Also Gillies wife Jackie was admitted to hospital there also , and when Discharged, Gillie had to pack up and return to Perth so he missed the march and BBq. Not sure what was the problem but we missed them as they both can't do enough for the boys. Hope they both are on the mend soon. Mick =================================================== Wish Father and Jackie all the best sorry to hear that all is not well, Gilly would be sad at missing a good weekend with the mates as well. Do you think that i could add this to the site as i'm sure the fellas would like to know and maybe even drop them a line or two. The Pom. ==================================================== |

Hey Pom, Whadaya reckon, next year I will bring a Boat across the ditch and we can all travel to Bruce Rock. Mick says it's only 260 K's West of Perth, only take us about 24 hours......... ( only joking ) Good article Mick, will I see you in Sydney again next year? Cheers Chester, aka Captain kookaburra. |

G’Day All, At the recent “Back to the Bush” reunion held last weekend in Bruce Rock WA, my daughter – Bree – wore a new T-shirt (see attached). She decided to have this made – “off her own bat”..!! It was never designed to be a money-making exercise – she just wanted to show her support for her old man and all Viet Vets in general She was swamped with enquiries and orders. She has also been asked to price a “Grandkid” edition. If you are also interested, please get in contact with Bree at either her email address of bree73@bigpond.net.au otherwise send a snail-mail to PO Box 31, Kelmscott WA 6991. The more orders she gets, the cheaper the costs. I suspect she’s created a monster for herself. Ladies and Gentlemen of the Association, I have received a request from Jim Bourke of Operation Aussies Home Inc, he is looking for the Log Book for A2-767 shot down in the Long Hai on 17 April 1971, all the crew escaped and he feels that the log book might have also survived. Jim is trying to establish how much fuel was on board at the time of the crash, if such is recorded. Anyone with information that might help Jim can contact him directly at Jim.Bourke@austmia.com Regards to all, Mike Downs National Secretary 19 November 2006 Ladies and Gentlemen of the Association, I have received a request for Assistance in relation to photographic records of A2-767 which was shotdown in the Long Hai mountains in April 1971 resulting in the loss of the Army Medic on board (John Gillespie) Roy Zegers, who was the Gunner on that flight, is visiting the crash site early next week and seeks help on locating any pix of the incident.
