Federal policeman murdered in Honiara The Australian Federal Police (AFP) will send extra resources to Solomon Islands today to investigate the murder of a 26-year-old officer. Canberra man Adam Dunning was killed this morning while on a routine patrol in Honiara. A sniper using a military-style rifle fired on the police vehicle Mr Dunning was travelling in with another officer. |
He was shot in the back and died at the scene. Mr Dunning had been a member of the AFP since March last year and previously served in East Timor. AFP Commissioner Mick Keelty says the murder is being fully investigated but will not deter the work of Australian police in the Pacific region. Commissioner Keelty says commanders of the force in the Solomon Islands are considering the use of body armour. He says body armour has been considered but he is mindful of the humid weather and sending any impression that Australia is over-reacting. "The police in the Solomon Islands, remembering that it is largely an unarmed mission because so many weapons have been removed from the community, don't [want to] have a knee-jerk reaction to this," he said. "[We want to] have a measured response. Having said that, we will take every precaution necessary to protect our own staff." Ministerial visit The Minister for Justice and Customs, Chris Ellison, says he will visit Solomon Islands along with Commissioner Keelty. He says the Federal Government will not let armed thugs influence its commitment to the region. "We will take every precaution in the protection of personnel," he said. "In this case, Officer Dunning was carrying out a duty in the service of law and order, in restoring law and order in the Solomon Islands, and made the ultimate sacrifice in what is a very important job. "Our thoughts are with his family and of course those serving in the Solomons." Mr Ellison says that despite the murder, the Federal Government remains committed to its mission in the Solomons. "We of course are intent on bringing those responsible for this murder to justice," he said. "The work that Officer Dunning was doing was crucial work to the restoration of law and order in the Solomon Islands. "We won't let this deter us in our mission in that country." |

Seems like a contradiction of terminology making a page like this, Losing a Brother in Arms and wishing everyone a Merry Christmas. But to all my ADGie Mates Merry Xmas and have a beer or two in remembrance of those who won't be here to share the spirit of Xmas with the rest of us. The Pom P.S our next page will be in the first week of 2005 |
